Why UK fiction is having another great year

One of the defining strengths of UK fiction is its deep literary tradition paired with a constant appetite for reinvention. In 2026, that shows up across prize-focused literary novels, sharply plotted crime fiction, gripping psychological thrillers, and expansive fantasy from some of the UK’s most distinctive voices. From major London publishing houses to independent presses across the country, UK authors continue to produce some of the most widely read and critically discussed fiction.

This year is no different and includes new work from Julian Barnes, V.E. Schwab, Matt Haig and so many more, including rising literary voices like Jem Calder. On the thriller side, UK readers can also look forward to new releases from major names like Gillian McAllister, Alice Feeney, and Lisa Jewell.
