Every February, Black History Month gives me a reason to pause and be more intentional about what I’m reading. The observance began in 1926, founded by historian Carter G. Woodson, and later expanded into a full month dedicated to honouring Black history, culture, and contributions. It’s a reminder of how often these stories were excluded, and why it matters to seek them out.

Why Black History Month and fiction go hand in hand

I always turn to fiction during Black History Month because stories have a way of sticking with me. Novels let me connect with characters on a personal level, whether they’re navigating history, family, identity, love, or survival. Black fiction isn’t one single experience or genre, it’s expansive, layered, and deeply human.

Below, I’ve rounded up ten recent fiction novels that feel especially fitting for Black History Month.
