What exactly makes a book a coming-of-age story? Sometimes it’s a teenager falling in love for the first time. Sometimes it’s leaving home, questioning your family’s expectations, or discovering that the future you imagined for yourself no longer fits. And sometimes it’s simply the moment when you can no longer go back to the person you used to be.
That’s what makes coming-of-age fiction so interesting to me: there’s no single way to grow up.
The 2026 books on this list reflect that range. They move between decades and generations, following characters through first loves, complicated friendships, grief, family secrets, ambition, rebellion, and the difficult process of figuring out where they belong. Some are tender and nostalgic; others are darker, more unsettling, or unexpectedly funny.
