Imagine there’s a black hole slowly making its way toward Earth and there’s nothing you can do to stop it… how would you react? What would you do? That’s the premise of this book, and I was instantly curious.

The story follows Don and Rodney, a couple in their 70s who have been together for 40 years. Once they learn of the black hole (and the impending end-of-the-world) they set out on a final road trip from Maine to Washington to tie up loose ends.

I love that Klune puts the characters and the human experience at the centre of this story. Throughout their road trip, Don and Rodney meet different people, all reacting in their own way to the events: some are hopeful, some are unraveling, some are trying to hold onto normalcy. Each encounter on their road trip brings something different.

I also found it fascinating to follow the progression of the black hole. Klune delves into a bit of science and imagines how this would unfold down on earth.

But really, at its core, this story is about Don and Rodney. Their relationship is warm and tender and their story reminds us that when the ending is certain, it’s not about changing the outcome but rather choosing how you want to get there.
