Brunch, secrets, and a dead ex… I loved the premise and context of Served Him Right by Lisa Unger.
In this story, we meet a group of women, each with their own distinct personalities, who meet for brunch to help ‘ex-orcise’ an ex… but to their surprise, the police interrupt the brunch to come announce the death of the ex in question. Sisters Vera and Ana are at the centre of the story, and Ana, the prime suspect, must clear her name.
There are lots of characters in this book, so many POVs as well, but I never found it overwhelming. Each character felt distinct enough that I could keep everyone straight and keep their connections to one-another straight as well.
What I enjoyed most is that I found myself constantly changing my mind about who the killer might be. Just when I thought I had it figured out, a new possibility would appear that made just as much sense. It kept me guessing.
I also really enjoyed the strong women-centered themes… women looking out for each other; sisters supporting sisters across generations. There is a strong theme of legacy in this story.
The ‘secret society’ element was another fun layer that added intrigue and history to the plot, but I don’t want to reveal too much about this.
Overall, this is a fun thriller with memorable characters and a great undercurrent of women taking control of their lives.
