Do you believe in reincarnation? The Girl in the Lake delves into that question and gave me a lot to think about. The book blends mystery, suspense, and paranormal elements, and is equal part thought-provoking and entertaining.
The story follows Kate Willis as she investigates six-year-old Henley Haskell's startling memories of a past life. What begins as a case study soon evolves into a deeper mystery connected to a decades-old tragedy. I enjoyed watching Kate work through the evidence. Her skepticism made her feel believable, and I appreciated that she was willing to follow the facts wherever they led.
The dual timeline structure added depth to the story, slowly revealing what happened in the past while Kate searched for answers in the present. I thought Oliver did an excellent job maintaining the mystery, and I never felt entirely certain how everything would come together.
As someone who enjoys paranormal fiction that explores the unknown without offering easy answers, this book was right up my alley.
This book is the first in a new series and the the ending left me eager to learn more about Kate and the unusual cases she investigates. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where the series goes next.
