I had a great time reading this story! The writing pulled me in right away, and I loved the characters and the humour sprinkled throughout. I also loved the Toronto setting, which gave the story a familiar Canadian feel.
The story follows Dina, a Toronto lawyer whose marriage has fallen apart just as she’s preparing for her influencer sister’s lavish wedding. Things get complicated when she reconnects with Lucky, a former law school crush, and old feelings resurface.
The wedding itself was a highlight for me. I loved getting a behind-the-scenes look at the traditions and food surrounding a South Asian Muslim wedding. As a non-Muslim reader, I found it especially interesting to learn more about a culture I’m less familiar with and these details added something special to the story.
Beyond the romance, I liked how the book touches on the pressure to meet family expectations, the complicated dynamics between siblings, and the differences in social class. As the eldest child, Dina struggles with balancing her family’s expectations with her own needs and happiness.
This was my first novel by Uzma Jalaluddin, and I’m happy to have discovered her as an author.
